At this time of year you'll be being sold sequins and partywear left right and centre! I don't want to be a party pooper but have you ever considered the detrimental impact those purchases can have on the planet and on your own health?! As they are derived from plastic so they don't biodegrade and could sit in landfill for thousands of years or end up polluting our oceans. Not only that but the process of creating them is extremely polluting to the environment and can cause havoc with our hormones. When we wash them they also create tiny microplastics which end up polluting the ocean too.
Having said all that, I LOVE A SEQUIN! I’m a big believer in sequins and sparkle being a year round wardrobe staple, rather than just something that is saved for best. They’re actually really versatile and can be dressed up or down, giving you lots of outfits from one item. One of my favourite looks for a sequin skirt is to team it with a band t shirt and some white trainers, with a leather jacket or coat in the winter or a denim jacket in the spring/summer. You could also consider a check or denim shirt a la Holly Willoughby pictured below. Or cosy up in a chunky knit on Christmas Day with a sequin skirt, to add that touch of glamour to a winter outfit at home.

The great thing about sequins is they don’t really date or go out of fashion, there is always a way to update them through the way you style them, with the other items in your wardrobe. I have a pair of glitter trainers from Air & Grace brought from The Dressing Room many years ago, that I’ve worn in so many different ways. Check out my instagram for some examples. They make me so happy adding a bit of sparkle to otherwise simple outfits. That’s my favourite thing about a bit of sparkle - it’s an instant mood booster no matter the season!
Another simple way to dress down your sequins is to wear a sequin top back with blue denim - boyfriend or straight leg jeans with white trainers. Or as pictured below, with heels, if you wanted to dress it up a bit more for an evening out. You can do the reverse with sequin trousers too, pair back your top half with a cashmere sweater or slogan jumper, for a high low mix.

It's really easy to find sequins preloved and in amazing condition, as many people will only wear them a couple of times and sell them on or donate to their local charity shop. I shared an amazing & Other Stories sequin dress in my last blog post which I found brand new with tags in Harpenden's Cancer Research Charity Shop. So don't be put off buying second hand, as you'll often save yourself some money whilst reducing your impact. Below are a few sequin pieces I found searching some of my favourite preloved sites this week. Pieces here start from 99p but you can find designer pieces too on sites such as Oxfam and Rebound if you're looking for something more special! Shop the edit below here on my Shopshare TV Channel (or click the image!).
I hope this has helped to share a few options on how to style sequins and sparkle in your wardrobe everyday rather than just for special occasions. If you’d like some more help sourcing some preloved sequins or with how to style your Autumn Winter wardrobe, please get in touch - I’d love to help!
